Though the gospel is simple enough for young children to understand, it can’t be properly understood unless properly explained.  Many who have come to LBC report that they never had the gospel fully explained to them until they came to Lighthouse, even those who grew up going to church.  We don’t want anyone who comes to Lighthouse to miss out on a clear and simple presentation of the foundational, saving truths presented in the Bible, which is why we always offer the Fundamentals of the Faith (FOF) class.  It is a simple presentation of the gospel and other foundational truths of Christianity.  It is open to everyone, Christian and non-Christian, and is required for membership.  If you have questions about Christianity, this is a great place to start.

Fundamentals of the Faith 1 is currently offered during the Sunday 11:00 AM hour. No enrollment is necessary. To join the class, just show up!

You are responsible for keeping track of your own attendance. Once all 13 lessons are completed, please turn in your attendance log to the instructor.

The Photography Ministry at Lighthouse is comprised of men and women who share a passion for both God and for taking pictures. Our ministry’s goal is to capture the life of the church in pictures so that we can be reminded of God’s faithfulness and past blessings in the years to come.

Generally, we meet 30 minutes before each event and assign tasks for each team member. It may seem that we’re roaming around at random, but we all coordinate and plan so all aspects of the event can be covered. Afterwards it takes one to two weeks for us to select, process, and upload our shots to Lighthouse’s photo website (http://www.lbcsd.smugmug.com).

The members photo wall is also our responsibility. We continue to shoot members’ photos before, during, and after each member’s meeting. If you’re a new member or need an updated photo for the wall, don’t hesitate to visit our “studio” during the next meeting.

It is our great joy that God can use our passion for photography to capture his body carrying out the MVP of our church. All of us are more than excited to share our passion with others. So if you ever have want to know what camera to buy, learn about photography, or even join the photo ministry, please get in touch with Brian Song (goriliat@gmail.com).

Sonlight serves the elementary school aged children of Lighthouse Bible Church as a ministry that appropriates the MVP of LBC to these young souls. The goal of the Sonlight ministry is to come alongside the parent(s) in order to impress the truthfulness of the Bible (in general) and the gospel (specifically) through teaching and modeling within the context of Sunday School. Starting in Fall 2010, we will have a first hour (during the general service message) and a second hour (during the normal Sunday School 2nd hour), which is a welcomed change. First hour will consist of singing and teaching. Second hour will include snacks and small groups. Small groups in Sonlight are designed to further develop the lesson that was taught through discussions, memory verses, and activities. The curriculum for the 2010-2011 school year will be “In the Beginning… Jesus,” produced by Children Desiring God, that will walk through the whole Bible and see how redemptive history is all about Jesus Christ!

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me at church or via email (abram.kim@gmail.com).

Sparklers is the pre-school ministry at LBC.  We preach the gospel to kids between the ages of 3-5 years (from when they are potty trained until kindergarten).  After the singing with the adults in “Big Church” the sparklers are dismissed.  Each Sunday we learn or review a memory verse with motions to go along with it, trying to teach the kids not only the words of God’s Word but the meaning too.  We have a lesson from the Bible that focuses on God.  Then we have snack time where the kids eat and chat.

On the Sundays where we have two services the second hour is devoted to coloring a picture related to the message and we try to get the kids to focus on ways they can apply what they learned from the Bible.  Of course since the kids in our ministry probably do not have a personal saving relationship with Jesus Christ, this is the primary point of application.

When the parents come to pick the kids up we hand the a “Parent Resource Sheet” with information about what was taught and the memory verse so parents can reinforce the lessons at home.

If you are a parent with more questions or you want to join sparklers staff speak with the coordinator Mike Hasegawa.

Elders:

  • Patrick Cho

Patrick Cho Hello, my name is Patrick Cho and I serve as the senior pastor at Lighthouse Bible Church. My wife Christine and I were married in October 2005, and we have one child, Eden Cassie, who was born in August 2008. I grew up in a Christian home and have lived in San Diego almost my entire life. Although I accumulated a lot of knowledge about the Bible and a basic understanding of the facts of the gospel as a child, it was not until my early years of college that God graciously saved me. He helped me to realize that I was living purely for myself and had not surrendered my life to Christ’s lordship. I praise God for my salvation and now strive to live in the strength He provides all for His glory. Some of my favorite hobbies include singing, playing guitar, cooking, and reading.

In 1999, I received a B.A. at the University of California in San Diego, where I majored in European History and minored in Philosophy. I also received an M.Div. from The Master’s Seminary in 2004. My high school friends used to say that I would be the most likely to become a pastor. I thought about it as far back as high school, but I decided to actually prayerfully pursue it while I was in college. During my third year at UCSD, I decided that there was nothing else that I desired to do. Although other career opportunities were presented to me, I felt the Lord’s call into ministry. Others in the church and in my family affirmed that they saw how God had gifted me to serve in this way, so after much prayer and consultation with various pastors, I submitted my application for seminary in the summer of 2000. By God’s grace and sovereignty, I served on staff at LBC throughout my seminary training.

I love Lighthouse! The people of LBC have always been very special to me. It is not common to find a congregation of believers so hungry for God’s Word and so sacrificial in their ministerial service. Those who visit the church often comment on how warm and friendly the people are, and others are encouraged by the family atmosphere that characterizes the fellowship. The weekly teaching from the Word is also something that stands out about LBC because it is a commitment to God’s truth that drives our overall ministry. The church is aware of our desire to uphold a high view of God and a high view of God’s Word, and the leadership is aware that the equipping of the saints will only be accomplished by the dedicated teaching of the Bible. I am thankful that Lighthouse is a church that can be characterized by its uncompromising commitment to the Word of God and its genuinely loving fellowship.

  • Michael Chon

Michael Chon I am married to my lovely wife Caroline and have three children, Tyrone, Isaiah, and Amber, as well as a dog named Ranger. I attended UCSD for my undergraduate studies, majoring in Biochemistry and Cell Biology. I then attended USC for my graduate studies in physical therapy, receiving my Doctor of Physical Therapy degree in the spring of 2002. I am currently working full-time in San Diego as a physical therapist.

I am currently overseeing the Children’s Ministry and Youth Ministry at our church. It has been a privilege to be able to serve at this church and to see God’s work through the lives of the people here.

  • Peter Lim

Peter Lim Hello! My name is Peter Lim and it’s my privilege to serve our congregation as an elder. I graduated from UCLA with a Computer Science and Engineering degree. My day job as an engineer for Motorola is fine and all but my real work is with my family at home and at the church. My wife Jinny and I have 3 daughters who keep us busy with challenges as well as entertainment. My hobbies include wood working and fishing. Some of my heroes include a carpenter and some fishermen.

Pastor John Kim (now senior pastor of LBC San Jose) and I were roommates at UCLA in the 80s where we stayed up many nights discussing what a church ought to be like. LBC is the culmination of those dreams, not that we are perfect. We know that God is continuing to bless our efforts because we see people coming to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior and people growing in their faith. It is my desire and passion in life is to train up young men who will be able to teach others also.

Deacons:

  • Andy Shin

Hey everyone! My name is Andy Shin and I serve as one of the deacons here at Lighthouse Bible Church. I graduated from UCSD with a degree in Management Science and now work in finance. A good friend invited me out to LBC back in 2005 and I’ve been here ever since! Over the years, God has not only taught me how important the local church is for the Christian, but has provided a great one in LBC. It is truly a blessing and privilege to serve you.

  • Kent Hong

Hello, my name is Kent Hong. I serve as a deacon for Lighthouse Bible Church San Diego which I have been attending since May 2003. I moved to San Diego from Toronto, Canada and I am currently working as a consultant in the education industry. I attended the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada for both my undergraduate and graduate studies in Accounting. I also earned an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

I am married to Romi and we have a beautiful son. I serve in the preschool, offering counting, and ushering ministries at church. I have been blessed to serve with this church body and to see how God has grown us from our humble beginnings. It has been amazing to witness how our church has grown, not only in numbers, but in our hunger for the truth of the Word.

  • Johnny Kim

Hi!  My name is Johnny Kim and I have been a member at LBC since 2007.  I attended Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and San Diego State University, where I received BS Aerospace Engineering and MBA degrees respectively, and now currently work as an engineer.

I am married to my beautiful wife Mimi and together as a family, we enjoy taking part in the lives of our bigger LBC family.  As a deacon, it is my hope that God can use me in whatever way to support the elders as they faithfully preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to serve and care for the members of LBC.
