What is a convalescent home?  It is a residence for patients to recover from long-term illnesses or medical procedures. While some of the residents of convalescent homes anticipate a return to their own homes after recovery, there are some who will remain there for the rest of their lives. All the residents require some sort of constant medical attention.  The convalescent home we visit is the ‘Mission Hills Health Care Center’ in the northern downtown area of San Diego in a region called Hillcrest.

It is into this environment that God has provided us an incredible opportunity to be ministers of the Gospel to the residents of the convalescent home. As Christians we have a great opportunity to go and joyfully serve as witnesses of Christ to the residents and staff.

By no means is a ministry like this without difficulty. One aspect of this stems from the necessity to continually present the Gospel to sinners and call them to repentance. Another aspect stems from being confronted from within by our short-comings in the depth of our love for others. But we can be encouraged that we have a divine hope for our ministry. Above all, it is a high privilege to share the Gospel with others and to see God at work in people’s hearts.

There is a great need for people to partake in this ministry. We are looking for people passionate to share the Gospel and require participants to be members in good standing at LBC. Since there will be many opportunities to share the Gospel and provide biblical counsel, training will be provided for those that commit to serve. We schedule visits primarily on Saturday afternoons or weekday nights depending on other church activities. Each visit lasts around an hour and a half and we ask that you be committed will be for at least one school quarter (about 4 months).

“Therefore, welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God” (Romans 15:7).

Many members of Lighthouse may remember the first time that they attended the church. They might remember only seeing an office building where the church was supposed to be. They might remember the nervous scanning for the familiar face that had invited them to come, and the anxiety that’s common when in a new environment. That’s where the New Visitors Team (NVT) steps in.

How we greet people is a testimony to how Christ changed us. We want to make sure new visitors feel welcome and that they’ve had a chance to hear the gospel.  We do everything from managing parking, to greeting at the front door, to New Visitors Orientation, all the way to follow up. When the newcomers walk through the doors of Lighthouse, they meet the members of the NVT that pass out the bulletins; first timers are encouraged to fill out the guest-book for follow-up later.

During New Visitors Orientation we get to know the new visitors better. They hear the gospel, the history of Lighthouse, how to find the right church.  They are also told Lighthouse’s doctrines on baptism and membership, as well as ministry opportunities for those eager to get plugged in.

In the following weeks, our new visitors also receive a follow up email or phone call from the NVT to answer any questions. And once every two months, the NVT hosts a Meet & Greet (with food!) to give recent newcomers as a relaxed environment to talk, eat, and get acquainted with the pastors.

We always have a need for more people, so if you are a member and would like to join the team, please contact Hwa Park, the New Visitors Team coordinator, at hwapark@yahoo.com. Communication within the team is the biggest challenge as our team continues to evolve. Please pray that our team will serve with a heart that seeks to please God through our interactions with first time visitors.

The Compassion Ministry at LBC focuses on making a positive impact in the lives of people in our local community and throughout the world. We do this so that we may show the world that we have a faith, hope and love that only Jesus Christ can give.

The core aspect of this ministry is to reach out to our local community. This is achieved through various outreach events throughout the year. These may include but are not limited to visiting convalescent homes, orphanages, women’s shelters, soup kitchens, home building in Mexico, and open EV on the streets. The goal is to use these outreach events for the purpose of bringing people to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ by preaching and living the Word.

Requirements for participation are: a regular attender of Lighthouse Bible Church and attend a meeting every few months in order to plan out events. The only needs of the ministry at this point are hearts that desire to make an impact for Christ. If you would like to participate in the compassion ministry contact Grace Lee.

Each Sunday, a group goes out to Pacific Beach and partners with the PB Presbyterian Church to help feed approximately 100-150 homeless men and women. There are opportunitites for people to help prepare and serve the food as well as share the Gospel message with the needy. This ministry generally runs from 3-6pm.  Volunteers who go to help Sunday afternoons just need to show up as PB members will direct what help is needed with meal preparation and serving.

Through the years, devotions have been shared by Set Free ministries, as well as visiting pastors from other local churches who have come to volunteer.

When LBC became involved with the ministry, a three-fold purpose was envisioned: To provide LBC members an opportunity to:

  1. get involved in the community as salt and light (Matt. 5:13)
  2. fellowship as they serve together in preparing and serving meals
  3. be obedient to Christ’s command to help the poor and needy (Deut. 15:11; Matt. 25:31-46)

Pacific Beach Presbyterian Church is located at 1675 Garnet Ave., Pacific Beach, and any interested LBC members are encouraged to make the initiative to go, whether as individuals or groups. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Joyce Kang or Grace Lee.

The LBC Choir seeks to praise God and edify the church through the singing of choral pieces. The choir sings occasionally for Sunday services as well as special events throughout the year such as the Christmas Concert, Anniversary Service, and Resurrection Sunday.

Auditions for the choir are held year round. Please speak with Eugene Park if you’re interested in joining.

Once every two months the LBC Orchestra provides the musical accompaniment for the congregational singing. In addition to that, throughout the year the orchestra plays for special events like the Christmas Concert, Anniversary Service, and Resurrection Sunday.

Auditions for the orchestra are available year round. If you have the heart and talent to serve on the team and you are a member, please speak to me.

The College Praise Team is the musical praise ministry that is part of the College Life ministry at Lighthouse. The ministry is called the “musical praise” ministry in favor of “worship team” to clarify a common misconception that worship is limited to the singing time that precedes the sermon. Music is just one of the many mediums in which we worship and give glory to God. The ministry purposes are to lead and facilitate musical worship of God, to personally understand and teach the body what biblical worship is, and to grow in excellence in musical talents and abilities. Currently, the College Life ministry serves on Wednesday at SDSU Bible study and Friday at UCSD Bible study

If you desire to serve the church body in the College Praise Team, please let us know. We can always use faithful servants who desires to glorify God through musical praise. If you are a collegian member, please contact Timothy Yu at timothy.yu@gmail.com.

Every Sunday, after Scripture is read, we look up from the opening prayer and are greeted by the familiar faces of the praise team. Within moments, the entire congregation is engaged in praise through song, lifting their voices and clapping their hands, guided by a steady snare, bellowing bass, vibrant voices, gleaming guitars, and crisp keys. It’s a beautiful picture of the body of Christ responding in unison to their God, but behind this scene lays much unseen preparation and prayer. Leading the church in worship is a serious matter for those involved with the team, and it shows on Sundays, as well as throughout the week.

In addition to the technical and practical aspects of playing music, preparation for Sunday worship is both a personal and continual matter; an understanding of the nature of worship is essential both for cultivating a heart of worship and for leading on Sundays, which is why the praise team devotes half their Thursday practice times to discussing readings.

If you desire to serve the church body in the LBC Praise Team, please let us know. We can always use faithful servants who desires to glorify God through musical praise. If you are a member, please contact Eugene Park at e1park@gmail.com.

For the past several years, we have had the joy of sending a team to Tucuman in Argentina. Working alongside Pastor Jorge Ahualli of Bible Missionary Church, we have been able to run week-long evangelistic campaigns each summer in the surrounding barrios. The teams spend each day preaching the gospel door to door and following up with individuals or families that express interest in hearing more about Jesus Christ. Weekends during the trip are spent worshiping together with the church and helping lead several training seminars to equip the church leaders and members.

The people in Argentina are generally very warm and friendly. The members of the church are incredible hosts taking good care of the team during our stay in Tucuman. Their hospitality and kindness is overwhelming and their Christian love is infectious. Many team members in the past have commented on how quickly they were able to engage in warm fellowship with the members of the church in Argentina. Especially when compared to San Diego, Tucuman is economically a poor neighborhood. The people do not have much which makes their generosity and hospitality that much more incredible.

Unlike the Czech Republic, Argentina has an overwhelmingly Catholic population. Many people in Argentina have a general belief in God, sin, heaven, and hell, but most believe that good deeds are necessary in order to merit salvation from God. The benefit of going to such a religious country is that many people are open to discuss issues concerning the Bible, salvation, and church. They will occasionally even invite our team members into their homes to discuss the gospel around their dinner tables. One of the challenges is that because they are so familiar with religion, the people will often nod their heads in agreement about what we share concerning the gospel without fully comprehending the seriousness of sin, the need for repentance, and other necessary components of the gospel message.

By God’s grace, we have been partnering in ministry with the church in the city of Ostrava since 2000. It has been a tremendous joy watching this church grow through the years because it was planted at roughly the same time as Lighthouse. Christian Church of Ostrava (or “KSOP” as it is abbreviated in Czech) has had Meinolf Mellwig, a missionary from Germany, as their pastor and he is assisted by Aleš Novotny. The church is experiencing steady growth year after year as it reaches out to the surrounding community.

Though the country is rich with religious history, the Czech Republic is predominantly an atheistic nation and still shows the effects of having been under the ideologies of communism. Many today still openly criticize Christianity as a religion for the weak, and a crutch for those unable to face reality. However, for the past several years, as we have been sending teams to the region, God has blessed us in being able to witness spiritual fruit and changed lives.

Usually our short term mission trips have been predominantly centered around a week-long English camp in which the gospel is presented through a series of evening programs. Through both fun and informative acts, the campers are able to see that Christians have fun but are serious thinkers too. We have seen many people respond positively as they are challenged in their spiritual lives.
